Wedding Ceremony Parade
First Time in Pontianak, Recorded By 100 Photographers

Pontianak. The first time in Pontianak since the birthday of this city has been celebrated, a royal wedding ceremony parade has been successfully conducted in terns of the anniversary of the city of Pontianak, the capital city of West Kalimatan, on the occassion of the 240 years.

The wedding ceremony parade have been succesfully attended and watched by thousands of people all accross West Kalimantan. However this is the first celebration in the field of royal wedding celebration, the parade has been succesfully attended by thousands of visitors from all areas of Pontianak. The number of the wedding ceremony parade were about 500 people and they are from all areas of Pontianak divisions ; City of Pontianak, East Pontianak, West Pontianak, South Pontianak, North Pontianak, and Southern of Pontianak. The man were wearing traditional malay clothes called "Teluk Belanga" , while the women were wearing "Baju Kurung".

The couple of the wedding ceremony has been given a shelter of umbrella and walking through from the building of Pontianak Post along the street of Gajah Mada. They were accompanied by their parents and the speakers of those two bridegroom, manggar parade, martial art guards, hadrah, Tahar, Malay orchestra , Pokok Telok (Eggs bank), Tanjidor and gift merchandises. Those merchandises were from the bride which consist of three catagories ; they are food, house hold matters, and all matters of for housing. Those merchandises were handed down by the local people to their bridegroom with certain way. There are also some shirts shaped like a doll of huge animal, and they could be changed in the frame of puppets and lots of another creatifity of the people for this wonderful events.

The sound of Tahar and Tanjidor were shouting each other along with the wedding ceremony parades from Pontianak Post Building heading to Coffee Warung called "Winny" in arround Gajah Mada street. They would be pleased to meet some judges which have been waiting for them arrive safe and sound. The judges chairman , the mayor of Pontianak city, Mr Sutardmidji, received the parade too. The judges may have seen that each group of the wedding participants were good at dressing and dancing of the local culture of Malay and Pontianak altogether. Each participants were good at making poems and poetry as part of the culture of Malay of West Kalimantan. Some of the participants were showing pencak silat (local traditional martial ats) which impressed so many audiences and visitors.

The most interesting of this wedding ceremony parade was the presence of more than 100 local and national photographers who witnessed and covered the events with their digital cameras. Each photograpgers tried to capture every single action, movement and situation of the participants of the wedding ceremony in their cameras. The national photographers were also working with local ones capturing any moments with their cameras for local and national publication. The idea and the most important meaning of the wedding ceremony parades were a sign of a man and a woman have been officially declared as husband and wife for the real life in the community in West Kalimantan.

Cap Goh Meh celebrations in Singkawang usually marked by the procession of the Tatung to monasteries or temple. Celebration was believed to have carried from generation to generation since 200 years ago. The Tatung come from various monasteries that spread throughout Singkawang, therefore not be surprised if Singkawang also earned the nickname of a thousand temples. In the monastery or pagoda 1 sometimes consisting of more than 1 person Tatung.

1. BATU BERTULIS

6. PAHA CEMETERY OF DEMANG KUNIN

Taman Pasir Panjang Indah (TPPI), or known Pasir Panjang is located 17 Kilometres from the city Singkawang, or about 150 kilometres from Pontianak, the capital city of West Borneo. Pasir Panjang Beach offers a great view to the horizon of Natuna sea, where lies Lemukutan Island, Randayan Island, and Kabung Island. With its long vast sandy beach, Pasir Panjang provides a place where you can either plays beach volleys, sunbathing, swim its clear shore, or just take a walk along the beach. There also huts provided by locals if you feel the sun is too hot for you to sunbath or have some coconut after an exhausting walk. Motorcross and road race circuit is also available if you brought your equipments.

There is also a fishing spots, family swimming pool, children playground, discotheque and cottages if you plan to spend the night there. Don't miss the beautiful sunset with the background of the islands surrounding the beach. Conditions have been signed in asphalt road and can be passed by four-wheel vehicles. Keraton Kadariyah

Keraton Kadariah Pontianak was built in 1771 by Sultan Syarief Abdulrahman Alqadrie. Located in Kampung Dalam Bugis, Pontianak, Keraton Kadariah is easily reached by any means of transportations, such as taxis, oplet-local mass transport by minivan with spesific colour to differ its track, becak- three-wheels driven manually by a human in rear-passengers front, or if you prefer a brief walk-about 5kilometres from city centre-a good way to sightsee the view of Kapuas river from the bridge.

Itinerary

DAY 1 : PONTIANAK – PUTUSSIBAU
One hour air access by planes of 42 passengers from Pontianak to Putussibau. Tropical rain forest, Kapuas river, and some shifting cultivation point can be shown from the plane. From the airport, the trip continues to the Hotel. Overnight at the hotel (D)

DAY 2 : PUTUSSIBAU- NANGA POTAN
Putussibau, the capital of the district of Kapuas Hulu, is located East of Pontianak - West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The tour will start from the boat station of the small town of Putussibau in a longboat with a maximum capacity of 10 passengers. At the boat station you can explore the riverbank of the Kapuas River, see several floating houses and watch local people paddling in their small wooden boats. While heading upriver to Nanga Potan we will pass traditional fruit gardens, shifting cultivation sites, rocky and sandy beaches and small settlements of local people. On the way we have a good chance to see some jungle birds, such as Egrets (Egretta garzetta), 9 species of Eagles, 4 species of swallows, King Fishers (Pelargopsis capensis), the Black Hornbill (Anthracoceros malayanus) and others. After two hours we will reach Nanga Potan, the last village in the Sibau watershed. Three sub ethnics of Dayak - Bukat, Kantuk and Taman - live here in 12 wooden houses. We invite you to explore this little village and to get into contact with the locals. (L, D)

DAY 3 NANGA POTAN – SUNGAI POTAN-SUNGAI JELUANG- CAMP 1
After breakfast we will start our trekking through traditional rubber plantations, rich fruit gardens and rice fields. During the dry season you can meet local farmers who are just coming back from harvesting the rubber. The following trek is a combination of dry and wet trekking. After hiking upstream the Potan River to the top of a small hill, we hike down to the confluence with the Jeluang River, where we will arrive after 4 hours of trekking. While trekking you can feel the genuineness of Borneo’s rain forest, enjoy the clear water, and listen to the wild animal’s calls.

At the confluence, we will cook a simple lunch for you. While waiting for the lunch to be served, you can relax, swim in the clear water or just enjoy the peacefulness of the forest. After lunch we will hike up Jeluang Hill, passing sorea trees and listening to animal calls. On the top of the hill we will construct a hanging tent to spend the night in. As the sun sets the jungle awakes and you will hear the amazing sounds of the nightly jungle life. Overnight at flying camp. (B,L,D)

DAY 4 CAMP1 – SUNGAI SUAI (CAMP 2)
In the early morning (around 5 am) you can do animal watching. If you are lucky you can encounter primates such as the Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus), the Bornean Gibbon (Hylobates muelleri and H. agilis), the Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros), the Giant Squirrel (Ratufa affinis) and a great variety of birds. You can also cook your traditional breakfast with the local at the camp.

Climbing up a steep hill is the challenge for today. It is expected to take us two hours. Once up there, you can enjoy the beauty and freshness of the pristine forest of the Heart of Borneo from an extraordinary place. This is the end of the heavy trekking part of the tour. It is then time to hike downstream in the calm Ribut River. While trekking on the river, you can see fishes and shrimps swimming in the pure water. After another hour we will reach the point where this river flows into the Suai River. It is here on the rocky-sandy riverbank that lunch will be prepared and served. The fishes and the clear water invite you for a swim before constructing the second hanging tent camp on the riverbank. In the evening you can leave your camp for nightly animal observing. In the late evening hours you are most likely to encounter various kinds of insects, frogs, fishes and even snakes. (B, L, D)

DAY 5 CAMP 2 – NANGA AWIN VILLAGE
After breakfast, we will head down the Suai River in a traditional wooden longboat until we reach the village of Nanga Awin. Boating through the clear river with its small rapids with local people will be exiting and adventurous. While on the boat you can also watch birds and fishes until we arrive in the traditional village of Dayak Kantuk. From Na. Awin we will ride a car to Baligundi Longhouse. After checking in to the home stay, you can explore the longhouse; In the evening you may be able to see traditional music and dances (Free program, B, L, D)

DAY 6 PUTUSSIBAU – PONTIANAK (ANOTHER DESTINATION)

Wild Animal Watching

Wildlife observing in their original habitat is a rare and special experience. The best places to watch the animals are close to the salt springs (sepan). Animals like to come here because its water is saltier than other places. The Kapuas Hulu district which located in deep heart of Borneo has a high biodiversity of its flora and fauna. It's really different from its biodiversity in our neighbor country, Malaysia. All animals in Indonesia have very unique and distinctive characteristics.

Sepan just River is one of big salt springs that offer excited adventure experience. This salt spring area is wide and visited by various wild animals. You can see how the wild animal act naturally in their original habitat. To reach Sepan Jut, we have to cruise up stream Sibau river by long boat at first. After arriving at Jut river estuary, we have to go up stream Jut river. If you hear about a name of long house , you will no longer wondering if you are really reside around in Landak, and other places of West Kalimantan in general. But for other regions, the length of the house share is very unique. There are lots of tourist objects now reside in District of Sanggau and the long house is one of their unique tourist ones.

The long house of Saham established in 1875. The long House consists of 35 doors and 180 meters long which is inhabited by ethnic Dayak Kanayatn Hill. The Social life of communities to uphold customs, traditions, culture and life together or in Indonesia can be called as "gotong royong". When visiting Indonesia, visitors should observe local customs and practices. Some common courtesies and customs are as follows :

*Although handshakes are generally acceptable for both men and women, some Muslim ladies may acknowledge introductions to gentlemen by merely nodding and smiling.
A handshake should only be initiated by ladies. The traditional greeting or salam resembles a handshake with both hands but without the grasp.

*The man offers both hands, lightly touches his friends outstretched hands, and then brings his hands to his chest to mean, "I greet you from my heart". The visitor should reciprocate the salam. It is polite to call before visiting a home. Shoes must always be removed when entering a home. Drinks are generally offered to guests. It is polite to accept.

*The right hand is always used when eating with one's hand or giving and receiving objects. The right forefinger is not used to point at places, objects or persons. Instead, the thumb of the right hand with four fingers folded under is the preferred usage.

*Shoes must be removed when entering places of worship such as mosques and temples. Some mosques provide robes and scarves for female visitors.

*Taking photographs at places of worship is usually permitted but always ask permission beforehand.

*Toasting is not a common practice in . The country's large Muslim population does not drink alcohol

The Department of Justice and Human Rights has officially determined that as of August 2005:

Indonesia Government had granted visa on arrival favor to 52 countries to be able to purchase the visa on arrival facility upon their arrival in Indonesia's designed “International Gateway” at 15 airports and 21 seaports. They are :

And started per 28 May 2007, Indonesia will be added its Visa on Arrival (VOA) favors to more 11 countries joined with previous 52 other favored countries according to the Directorate General of Immigration recent released paper.

The 11 countries are Algeria, the Czech Republic, Fiji, Latvia, Libya, Lithuania, Panama, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Tunisia.

Tourists from those selected countries will not oblige to apply abroad for a visa but can purchase a visa on arrival at 15 gates of Indonesia's international airports and seaports. The fee for this visa, payable upon landing, is US$10 for a 7 day visa and US$25 for a 30-day visa.

The official entry requirements for the issuance of a 30 or 7 days day visa-on arrival:

* Passport must be from one of the countries listed above.
* Passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 (six) months from the date of entry into Indonesia.
* Payment of US$10 or US$25 must be paid at the gateway, depending on the length of visa required.
* Onward or return tickets are compulsory.
* Visitors must enter and exit through one of the 15 airports or 21 seaports officially approved as an “international gateway” by the Indonesian Immigration department.

Visa Free Facility
11 countries and territories are eligible for a "Visa Free" facility. Those holding valid passports from the following countries will be granted a non-extendable 30-day Visa-Free Short Visit Permit upon arrival at an Indonesian international gateway without charge:

5. Malaysia
6. Morocco
7. Peru

Travel Formalities in Indonesia

All travelers to Indonesia must be in possession of passport valid for at least six months from date of arrival and have proof (tickets) of onward or return passage.

Free Tourist Visa:
Immigration authorities provide Free Tourist Visas for a period of 30 days to nationals from 11 countries only on the basis of reciprocity. These countries are Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Chile, Morocco, Peru and Vietnam.

Visa On Arrival
Visa On Arrival has been given to nationals from 36 countries. These are Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Norway, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, New Zealand, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, Austria, Belgium, India, Ireland, Kuwait, Luxemburg, the Maldives, Egypt, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, the People’s Republic of China, Russia, Saudi.

These Visa On Arrivals are valid for 30 days and may be extended with the permission of the Indonesian Immigration under the following conditions: natural disaster (occurs in the place visited by the tourist); the traveler is ill or meets with an accident during their visit.

Other nationals must apply for visa at Indonesian Embassies or Consulates in their home country. Furthermore, the visa cannot be replaced with any other forms of immigration letters.

Visa free entry is also allowed for registered delegates attending a conference which has received official approval For those not belonging to the above categories, tourist visas can be obtained from any Indonesian Embassy or Consulate. Holders of a Certificate of Identity (CI) from Hong Kong can obtain visas for group travel, with a minimum of 5 persons, from the Consulate General of Indonesia in Hong Kong for visits not exceeding 30 days. Travel and accommodation should be arranged by a tour operator. Entry and exit must be in groups, and through Soekarno-Hatta International airport of Jakarta, "Ngurah" Rai- Bali or Polonia Medan.

Entry and exit must be made through certain specified gateways:
By air through Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Manado, Biak, Ambon, Surabaya and Batam; By sea through Semarang, Jakarta, Bali, Pontianak, Balikpapan, Tanjung Pinang and Kupang. For other ports of entry and exit special visas are required.
The maximum stay permitted is two months and is not extendible.

CUSTOM
Indonesian Customs allows on entry a maximum of two liters of alcoholic beverages, 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 100 grams of tobacco and a reasonable amount of perfume per adult. Cars, photographic equipment, typewriters and tape recorders must be declared to Customs upon entry and must be reexported. 'prohibited from entry are TV sets, radios, narcotics, arms and ammunition, printed matter in Chinese characters and Chinese medicines.

Advance approval has to be acquired for carrying transceivers and all movie films and video cassettes must be censored by the Film Censor Board. Fresh fruit, plants and animals must have quarantine permits. There is no restriction on import or export of foreign currencies. However, the export or import of Indonesian currency exceeding Rp.50,000 is prohibited.

TRANSPORTATION FROM SOEKARNO-HATTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
TO THE CITY V.V
Taxi fares are metered and to the downtown area of the city where most large hotels are located. The air conditioned airport bus service will cost approximately to any of the five city zones. Hotel limousine services are provided by some of the leading hotels in the city, offering a city-airport-city transportation service on a complimentary basis to hotel guests. At all major airport terminals, inquires about local transportation should be directed to the information counter.

EXIT
The Government of Indonesia has officially abolished the exit permit required for people leaving the country, effective from August 17, 1992. Airport tax levied on passengers for international travel for travel within Indonesia regional variations occur.

TIPPING
Major hotels usually add a 10% service charge to bills. Where it is not included a tip of between 5% to 10% of the bill would be appropriate if the service is satisfactory. Airport porters expect for a small bag and for bags weighing more than 20 kg. Tipping taxi and hire-car drivers is not mandatory, but if service has been satisfactory tip is sufficient for a taxi driver, Hire-car drivers would normally expect a larger tip.

DRESS CODE
Dress is normally informal in Indonesia due to the warm, humid climate and clothing of light fabrics are recommended. Travelling in highland areas is noticeably cooler, however, and carrying a light sweater may prove useful. Accepted attire for men is a shirt and long pants.

A jacket and tie are required for official calls or for more formal occasions. Long sleeved batik or handwoven shirts are acceptable for evening functions. For ladies, dresses, blouses, and long pants are appropriate. Shorts, halters or tank tops should only be used at sports facilities or on the beach.

OFFICE HOURS
Business offices are usually open either from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm or 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, with a break for lunch between 12.00 noon and 1.00 pm. but on Saturday many business offices are closed.
Government office hours are from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturday many Government offices are close.

BANKING
Normal banking hours are from 8.00 am to 2.30 pm from Monday to Friday. Some bank branches in hotels, however, keep longer hours.
Jakarta has several international banks but money can also be changed at hotel cashiers, and authorized money changers. Daily exchange rates are published in newspapers.
The US dollar is the most readily accepted currency.
Most major tourist destination areas have foreign exchange facilities, but for travel to remote areas, it is advisable to change money and travelers cheques in advance. Credit cards are acceptable only at major hotels, restaurants and travel agencies.

CURRENCY
The unit of currency is Indonesia Rupiah indicated as IDR.
USD1 is roughly equivalent to IDR 9.980,-.
Foreign currency can be converted at banks and money changers.

SHOPPING
Major cities in Indonesia have shopping complexes, supermarkets and department stores where prices are fixed. Shops are usually open all week including Sundays.
Shopping hours are usually between 9.00 am and 9.00 pm for department stores and supermarkets in the large cities with shorter hours on Sundays. In smaller cities, shops may be closed between 1.00 pm and 5.00 pm.
Bargaining is customary in small shops and markets, the art of which is to start at half the asking price and slowly increase your offer until a compromise is reached. Remember it helps to smile while bargaining.

NATIVE SPORT
However, the most popular sports in Indonesia are soccer, badminton, and table tennis. Golf is becoming more and more popular and a number of excellent golf course can be found across the archipelago. Most major hotels have their own tennis and squash courts, swimming pools, health clubs and those at seaside resorts provide equipment for sailing, surfing, scuba diving and windsurfing. There are also a growing number of dive shops which provide necessary equipment and professional services.

Traditional sports in Indonesia include bull races, bull fights, rowing, and unique ram fights, all of which are held as part of special festivities. Silat, a martial art, can be performed as a dance or an exercise and is comparable to Karate or Kung Fu.

TIMEZONE
Achipelago is spread over three time zones. Western Indonesia Standard Time, which covers the islands of Sumatra, Java & Madura, West and Central Kalimantan is 7 hours ahead of GMT; Central Indonesia Standard Time covers East and South Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali and Nusa Tenggara, and is 8 hours ahead of GMT; finally Eastern Indonesia Standard Time, which covers Maluku, and Irian Jaya is 9 hours ahead of GMT.

ELECTRICITY
Power supply is usually 220 volts/250 cycles in large cities, but 110 volts is still used in some ares. Normal outlets are plugs with two rounded pins. It is advisable to check electricity supplies before using any applian

International health certificates for smallpox and cholera are not required, except from travellers arriving from infected areas.

The site encompasses a broad range of forest habitats ranging from coastal beach and mangrove forest to untouched mountain forests on the slopes of the Gunung Palung (1116 m) and Gunung Panti peaks. Peat and freshwater swamp forest and highly endangered lowland dipterocarp forests ring the base and lower slopes of the isolated Palung mountain massif.

At Cabang Panti, located deep within the park, Harvard University has established a research station including a research network that encompasses a total area of approximately 1500 ha on the western side of Gunung Palung. A pilot project for community-based buffer zone management, including production forestry, in an area of approximately 8,000 hectares adjacent to the park currently tries to reduce pressure from illegal logging on the park and seems successful.

The project is jointly administered by the Directorate General of Forest Utilization in the Department of Forestry and Estate Crops of The Republic of Indonesia and the Laboratory of Tropical Forest Ecology, Harvard University. The Harvard research station can't be visited by tourists.

Tari Radat Sambas (Radat Dance of Sambas). Radat dance is usually performed in a wedding party or other cultural ceremonies. Radat is one of various Sambas Malay cultures which is the assimilation between Malay and Islamic Middle East cultures.

Radat in Terengganu.

Until today, it is still difficult to track the exact period of when Radat came to Terengganu. However, according to some Radat instructors of Terengganu that this performance originally came from Middle East since the lyrics are mostly copied from Hadrah Book, and music instruments are almost identical with Rebana (tambourine) of Hadrah. It is believed that Radat was introduced by some traders of Sambas, West Borneo.

… “Very few of the instructor of performers had any idea of the origin of the performance, but in one or two cases it was recalled that years ago natives of Sambas in Borneo used to come anually in the fine weather for trading, and that during their stay in Terengganu they used to dance the ‘Rodat’ …The dance had proved popular and the local people had learn it from the traders … ” (4).

According to the author of Mastika, August 1967, Radat was brought by traders of Sambas and Pontianak to Terengganu 50 – 60 years ago. They came to buy Songket, golden thread, woven materials, and other products. They sailed to Terenggangu bay.

During their stay in Terengganu, the traders of Sambas gathered around 10 to 20 people played small Rebanas, sang, and danced together until midnight. The easy listening lyrics attracted the local people of Kuala Terengganu to come close to the performers near their big ship. From here the local people learned Radat.

Another opinion, Mr. Salleh bin Musa (a Radat instructor), 56 years old, states that around 70 – 80 years ago Muhammad Kepak, Cik Udun, and Abdullah Pepeh (cloth traders of Terengganu) brought Radat to Terengganu from Sambas. It was them who first played Radat in Terengganu especially in Kampung Pasir Panjang. Muhammad Kepak played his role as the singer and Rebana player, Cik Udin as the dancer, and Abdullah Pepeh as the singer. From this performance, Radat spread throughout Terengganu.

Zapin Dance

It is believed that Muslim missionaries of the Middle East namely Persia and Arabia introduced the dance to Malaya during the fifteenth century. The dance was originally performed by males only however it is also performed by female dancers these days. The simple version of the Zapin is performed to the rhythm &1234 and the foot is extended out to the side on the last count. It can be done on the spot, traveling forwards and backwards or diagonally in the basic form. The carriage of the dancers is quite erect and dignified.

The music for Zapin comes from an ensemble of traditional instruments which include the lute (gambus), gypsy-type bongos (marwas) and the violin. There are no hard and fast rules as to the number of dancers that perform. However because of the very interactive nature of this dance, it is usually performed in pairs.

The dancers can then play with each other, teasing, challenging and enjoying each others company. It is most popular in Sambas. There are numerous forms of Zapin dances and it varies from state to state. One of the most popular forms and certainly more evolved and intricate is the Zapin Tenglu from the town of Sambas. Said to be inspired by the ebb and flow of the tide and the lives of fishermen, the dance has many unexpected movements like a rotation of the body from the waist followed by a sudden accented, sharp and held movement of the arms and shoulders.

It is said that these movements are derived from the feeling of being tossed around in a fishing boat and having to catch yourself before you are thrown overboard.Jepin Softness Dance is a type if traditional Sambas dance which very popular now days.

Pontianak lies on the Kapuas river where many houses are built over the water and are connected with each other by wooden bridges.

Small boats sail up and down the river to transport people and goods from one place to another. Pontianak is known as a producer of oranges, although the fruits are actually grown in the Tebas district, 300 kilometers north of the city. Pontianak has some attractive tourism objects. The city is located on the equator, at the north of the rivers Kapuas and Landak.

Kapuas River
The Kapuas is 1,143 kilometers long. It is the most important river in the area, and can be navigated by small boats weighing up to 1.000 tons up to Putussibau, the capital of the Kapuas Hulu regency, 814 kilometers from Pontianak. A small motorboat can even go further upstream. Pontianak's links with various other cities inside the province and outside are smooth. By car

What To See in West Kalimantan

Pontianak
As the capital of West Kalimantan, there are some interesting places to visit, among others the Equator Monument, Kadariah palace in Kampung Dalam, the State Museum, the Kapuas and Landak Bridges with a river view and floating market. Betana (Long House)

Boat Race in Sambas Back Again

Sambas Race-boat competition conducted by the Government of Sambas Regency called "Sampan Bidar" or "Bidar Boat Race" has been successfully held yesterday, in Sambas, to commemorate the anniversary of the city. Danau Sentarum National Park : Gateway to Danau Sentarum

Danau Sentarum National Park (DSNP),is located in a remote area of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and situated close to the Malaysian border of Sarawak, approximately 700 km. inland from the provincial capital, Pontianak. DSNP is an area of interconnected seasonal lakes and seasonally flooded tropical forests with the water catchment consisting of lowland tropical forest in the hills and flooded forest in the low-lying areas. A patchwork of various forest developmental stages characterizes the former and is a result of commercial logging, swidden cultivation, and smallholdings of rubber and pepper.

The altitude within the park is approximately 30-35 m. above sea level, while the surrounding hills rise as high as 760 m. Daytime temperatures are consistently 26-30 degrees Celsius, with annual rainfall ranging between 3000 and 4000 mm. The driest months are usually July, August, and September. The area was established as the Danau Sentarum Wildlife Reserve in 1985. The main part of the park comprises around 1250 square km though the exact boundaries of the park remain unclear.

The Iban longhouse community of Sungal Sedik (2) located about 6 km. from the district administrative center and market town of Lanjak. The longhouse was a 14-household community containing about 98 residents. The Sungai Sedik territory was occasionally hunted by members of at least five other longhouse communities and residents of Lanjak.
